Decoders

Lenz New Gold and Silver series decoders are quite simply the best available. They are high frequency (silent) and feature back emf motor control that can be configured to the particular motor characteristics in the locomotive. This motor drive offers exceptional quiet and smooth operation to the locomotive. The Gold JST and Silver-MP decoders are ideal for S scale (not unmodified Gilbert American Flyer) because of their Current Rating: Cool Continuous running: 1 A, peak running: 1.8 amp, Stall Current: N/A (over load protected). The Gold JST and Silver-MP decoders are suitable for motors that have very high (6 amps and more) stall currents but do not peak over 1.8 amps. This covers all SHS locomotives, and all other S scale we have tested (except Gilbert AF). More details on applicability to non-SHS locomotives elsewhere. More details on the Gold-JST decoder here.

The differences between the Gold and Silver are:

Gold has a JST 9 pin plug on the decoder, with a detachable harness. Silver has a harness soldered to the decoder.
Gold has 200ma Function current rating, Silver is 100ma.
Gold has USP Uninterruptible Signal Processing, Silver does not.
Gold has RailCom bi-directional communication, Silver does not.

The Gold JST-MP comes with the LY012, 9-pin NMRA JST socket to 8-pin NMRA medium plug. The Silver-MP comes with an attached harness (no JST plug) with an NMRA Medium plug. The 8-pin NMRA Medium Plug will plug into the SW-1, SW-9 or NW-2 sockets.

Sets

We offer two sets, the only difference being the handheld. These are full-featured sets, expandable and upgradeable. You (and your railroad) will not outgrow these sets! If you like to control trains with buttons, Set-100 is the way to go. If you prefer a knob, set-90 is for you. If you later change your mind, just get the other handheld! Handhelds

There are two Handhelds (also called throttles, or cabs) available. The LH100 is button oriented, the LH90 is knob oriented. Click on the links above for more info from the Lenz site. Multiple handhelds of either type can be added to the Set-90 or Set-100.
