The QSI Revolution U uses a different strategy for functions. The default is that lights are automatic. This leaves more functions available for controlling sound. This can be modified by setting CVs if desired.
SHS is now installing QSI in new F7s when DCC sound is required. We are also installing QSI decoders into customer's F3s or F7s as a service. We program for numberboards, headlight, Mars light (if loco has one), class lights (F7 only) and dynamic brake. The locomotive Roadnumber is programmed as the DCC address. The cost is $179.95.
The standard setup as shipped from SHS when installed in an F3 or F7 is:
| Light | Assigned function key | Light Port | Operation Forward/Neutral from Forward/NfR/Reverse |
| Headlight | F0 | 1 | Bright/Dim/Dim/Dim |
| Rear Headlight | NA | 2 | Not used. Optional use as Cab light. |
| MARS | F0 | 5 | Bright/Dim/Dim/Dim |
| Number Boards | F12 | 6 | Bright/Bright/Bright/Bright |
| Marker Lights | F12 | 3, 4 | Green/Off/Off/Red |
| Cab Light (if installed) | F12 | 2 | Off/Bright/Bright/Off |
If any of these lights are not installed on the locomotive, then of course they will not work. The operation column shows the default setup: if your loco has a MARS light, it can be turned on or off (with the headlight) by using F0. The default will be on (you have to shut it off if you don't want it). When on, the MARS will be bright (strobe) when loco is moving forward, it will be dim (no strobe) when the loco is stopped or backing up.
Although there is no cab light on the F3 or F7, we set up the rear headlight wire (yellow wire) as a cab light in case you want to install one. Use an LED with the appropriate resistor.
| Assigned function key | Sound Moving | Sound Stopped | Comments |
| F1 | Bell | Bell | |
| F2 | Horn | Horn | An alternate horn can be set with F11 |
| F3 | Grade Crossing | Coupler Sounds | Long, Long, Short, Long. Adjustable. |
| F4 | Cooling Fans | Cooling Fans | |
| F5 | Dynamic Brakes | None | Only works while moving |
| F6 | Doppler | Startup | |
| F7 | Flange and Air Brakes | Air release | F7 will apply brakes while moving, if speed step 0 |
| F8 | Mute | Mute | Mute is very low sound. Can be adjusted. |
| F9 | Sound of Power | Disconnect/Standby/Shutdown | |
| F10 | Status Report | Status Report | When moving, gives speed in scale MPH, temp C |
| F11 | Select Alternate Horn | Select Alternate Horn |
The QSI Revolution will speak the value of any CV when in operation mode (Programming on the Main - POM) programming. To read back the value of any CV, program its CV number into CV 64.
QSI uses some indexed CVs. To program or read back these CVs, program the primary index into CV 49, and the secondary index (if there is one into CV 50. Then to read back the CV, program the CV number into CV 64. To change the CV, program the CV.
Example: Program CV 53.14.0 to 137:
1. Set CV 49 to 14 (primary index)
2. Set CV 50 to 0 (secondary index)
3. To speak current value, set CV 64 to 53
4. To set 53.14.0 to 137, program CV 53 to 137.
