Wally Collins S Scale Layout

The Central Jersey S Scalers recently held their meeting at Wally Collins' house, which features an excellent S Scale layout. Here are a few pictures of the layout, taken by Don Thompson. Captions are from information provided by Wally, errors are all mine!

This Coal breaker is the Cabin Creek Coal Tipple, a Masters Creation kit from BTS

This coal breaker with the power house, etc is from a series of Lehigh Valley Models kits.

The coaling tower is a close replica of the one that stood in the CV St. Albans, VT yard until the early 50s. It was scratch built by Wally about 30 years ago from Northeastern lumber. The sand house to its left is kitbashed from an LV kit. It was reversed and narrowed to fit between two tracks.

Don Thompson christened the body of water in the distance as Lake Oradell. The background was painted about 1964 by then well known author Dick Houghton who painted it in a specially constructed shed in his back yard in Southern California. My guess is Dick thought he was painting the Pacific Ocean!

The yellow station on the next level above the trestle was assembled by Wally some 30 years ago from a Mini-Structures kit (Hansel Main).

The trestle bents, the deck bridge at the far left, the Howe truss on the right and the one in the distance were all assembled using those great Black Bear jigs.

The turntable is from AAA Precision with an automatic indexing drive from New York Railway Supply.

The roundhouse was scratch built. The roofs are removable and interior structure is detailed. Thanks for the tour, Wally! It's a great layout!
