USRA Hoppers

Starting in 1918, the United States Railway, Administration (USRA) took control of the nations' railroads. To aid in the WWI war effort, they standardized the design of both steam engines and freight cars. Over 22,000 two bay hoppers were ordered with most cars delivered after the Great War. These cars had an inside length of 30'6' with a 1880 cubic ft. capacity. They were seen in steam and diesel consists and lasted until the mid 60's. As these cars aged, several railroads tried to increase the capacity by adding panel sides. Many of these cars were rebuilt as covered hoppers.

Most cars were announced as a single car or a three-car boxed set, with each car in the set and the individual car all with different numbers.
